Sri Lanka trip for veterinary physiotherapy lecturer

A lecturer from Harper Adams University is travelling to Sri Lanka to help inform and educate veterinary staff in the field of veterinary physiotherapy.

Beth Roberts, who joined Harper Adams last year, is working with charity Embark, to share the benefits of using veterinary physiotherapy in practice.

Embark is a Sri Lankan charity dedicated to improving the wellbeing of stray dogs, whilst reducing their population and preventing rabies.

Beth, 31, from Chesterfield in Derbyshire, said: “I’ll be working on actual cases as well as helping to run seminars and give demonstrations.

“Veterinary physiotherapy is a relatively new technique in Sri Lanka and so isn’t quite as advanced as in the UK. I’m looking forward to being able to help the vets with both current and future cases.”

The two week trip will be the first time that Beth has lectured abroad, having more than 10 years’ experience in practice with two years specifically in veterinary physiotherapy.

She was among the first cohort of students to obtain a Postgraduate Diploma in Veterinary Physiotherapy from Harper Adams in 2011, and has since gained a specialist certificate in small animal hydrotherapy and completed her MSc.

Beth added: “I’m hoping that the experience will show me how to do things with smaller budgets and without the luxuries that we often take for granted here in the UK.

“I believe it will be good for my professional development and give me further experience to draw upon during lectures with students. I also hope to be able to make useful contacts for the future which could lead to opportunities for my students as well.”

Beth leaves for Sri Lanka on December 5. She is now working to raise funds to help re-pay the charity for accommodating her.
